Taking Care of Business and Helping the
World
Plaid employees' long list of charitable
activities.
by Staff Report (August 20, 2007)
For nearly a decade, Plaid employees have sponsored a wide range
of company activities generating a total of $100,000 in individual
contributions on behalf of the American Cancer Society Relay For
Life of Gwinnett County, GA. Those funds, in addition to Plaid's
corporate donations of nearly $50,000, have contributed to Gwinnett
County's recognition as the single largest fund raising event for
the American Cancer Society in the country for the current
fund-raising year ending Aug. 31.
"Plaid employees are a reflection of our company's
culture," said Plaid President Mike McCooey. "We believe
in being good corporate citizens, but at their core, our people are
just kind and caring folks. They want to make a difference, both at
work and in the community."
In addition to participating in the actual springtime Relay event
– for which Plaid has received several awards – employees have
staged a wide range of activities: breakfast cooked and served by
management, lunchtime barbeques, soup and salad day, and a bake sale
are among the tasty events repeated annually. Other favorites
include Easter egg hunts for employees' children, plus plant, book,
and luminaria sales. Plaid's grand finale of this fund-raising year
was a silent auction featuring prizes donated by management
including a houseboat party, extra vacation day, beach get-away, and
a reserved parking spot.
Furthermore, activities such as balloon launches and ribbons for
the company's Christmas tree have been designed to remember or
support employees and/or family members who have battled cancer.
(Comment: I suspect activities like these provide an
additional benefit: higher employee morale.)
